FRI Seminar Series - Conceptualising government- community relationships in the context of forest and fire management in Australia and Nepal
Dr Prativa Sapkota, Research Fellow, Ecosystem and Forest Sciences, The University of Melbourne

In this seminar, Dr Sapkota will present a recent work on conceptualising government and community relationship in the context of forest management drawing examples from Nepal and Australia. Main contribution of this work is development of relationship typology such as Authoritative, Managerial, Interactive and relational. These relationship types are characterised and distinguished by practice, problem framing and worldview. Drawing on insights from Nepal and Australia to examine how these relationships are conceptualized and practiced in forest and fire management, this paper argues that there is a need to work toward more interactive and relational approaches incorporating social justice and uncertainty. This paper also recognises that problem framings and world views associated with longstanding authoritative and managerial approaches may limit prospects to forge new forms of relationships.
